Rie is the daugther of a Samurai. Her father was Hanamura, a vassal of the shogun. For generations the Hanamura family shouldered important roles for the shogunate, but after Rie's father was suspected of misappropiating funds, the family was wiped out. Rie's father claimed he was innocent, but the higher ups didn't want to hear it. After that, her father committed suicide. Having lost her home and family, Rie became a female swordsman.
